Theories: Carol vernallis
Carol Vernallis- The kindest cut
- Vernallis analyzed editing in music videos and in Hollywood film.- Vernallis identified exact specific approaches to each video and film.
Music videos:
- Lots of different narrative strand/ paths are used in a music video showed by the performance. This is different in a Hollywood film there is a clear single strand.
- the order of shots are unconventional, a shift that is more free between shots. Absence of a proper order of shots. This is different in a Hollywood film where there would be an order that is conventionally always followed for example: an establishing shot for the opening of the film.
- Time, space character and the narrative are revealed slowly throughout the video instead of a definite knowing of all those things prior to watching it. however this is different in a Hollywood film where the audience would already know the time period and the characters present.
- Discontinuity, meaning for example pop videos draw the audience away from the narrative to base it on other structures. Continuity is used in films to draw the audience to the actual narrative which is the main aspect.
- Visual hooks are present in music videos and this creates continuity, however non continuous shots that are linked by a single feature/image.
Radioactive- Imagine Dragons: In this video it is clear that the order of shot is unconventional. The video starts with a high angled shot that shows a long long shot of a person walking towards the audience. This is the opening of the video and did not give us an establishing shot towards the audience where this video is set neither was there any indication of a time set. We then say the characters face wearing the blue hoodie, however theres still no indication of who she is or who she represents. Also the content of the box is a mystery until the end of the video.
Theory: Shots of artist within a music video will encourage the audience to piece together the image of the artist, this is called a phantasmagorical body ( a body made up in our mind from various shots given).
Rihanna- Diamonds: In this clip this theory is present due to the Phantasmagorical body i had whilst watching the first minute of this music video. It begins showing mainly her fingers, showing us the audience that she is more of an adult artist due to her fake nails. then it progressed to a shot of her hand to her elbow in water. then we partly saw the female artists face in low key lighting, however her shoulder was more lit up showing her tattoo. This is an example of this theory as we saw features of the artist body before we saw a long shot/ full body of shot, showing exactly what the artist looked like.

Theories: Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin: Illustration, Amplification and Disjuncture
Illustration: in an illustration music video it always cuts on the beat. The lyrics always have a literal meaning of feeling that is clear in the music video. Also the band area and the way they dress are as expected due to the meaning.
Rebecca Black- Friday
- This music video is Illustration due to the literal meaning. This music video is about a girl going out to a part on Friday because that the break up of the weekend. Also they are dressed casually as if they were getting on with their everyday.
Disjuncture: In a Disjuncture music video the film cuts off the beat, which could look like a badly made music video if not done correctly. The images shown within the music video doesn't relate to the lyrics. Also the band image: The band take on an image that is nothing like or the complete opposite of their expected image.
Da Funk- Daft Punk
- This music video resembles the type of a disjuncture music video. The images shown within this video were completely non related to the song and the music. This is clear because of the talking dog carrying the radio throughout the whole video.
Skrillex- Bangarang
- This music video is a disjuncture video because the video has no relevance to the meaning of the lyrics and the meaning of the song. In the video there's a driver eating an ice-cream and he had a thick black mustache, chasing after a few of these teenage boys.
Amplification: In an amplification music video the film cuts on the beat but also off the beat which could emphasise the features. The images shown throughout the video amplifies the lyrics and also the band takes on a fictional role in a narrative.
Mr. Probz Waves (Robin Schulz Remix Radio Edit)
- This is an amplification video which means the performance and images shown in this video amplified the meaning of the lyrics and the band almost takes on a fictional role as shown in this video. This is about a person having a good life with this woman and slowly he loses her but in the video it cuts between the past and the present. In the present he is on a beach stranded almost drifting away like the lyrics suggest. He is looking back on the past which is what it cuts to. This exaggerates the meaning of the lyrics.
Katy Perry- Dark Horse
- This video is an example of Amplification. This is shown by the fictional character Katy Perry takes on. She is singing about an Egyptian queen called Cleopatra that was a powerful woman. In this video she is resembling her an singing about her powers and not to fall her because she will control anyone using her powers. This is clear throughout the music video where she uses her powers and her costume and setting was as expected in Egypt in ferro times.

Conventions of a music video
conventions:
- mid to close up shots of the lead artist.
- props such as instruments, microphone.
- direct address with the camera, so they are talking directly to the audience.
- a variety of different angles.
- usually fast pace editing but the pace changes with different genres.
